The new “Retina” display is undoubtedly the centerpiece of Apple’s new iPhone 4. Every other feature that the phone has fades away in comparison to this absolutely amazing screen. The first time I laid my hands on the iPhone 4 I honestly believed that the phone was a feature of the display and not vice versa.
Much of the magic comes from the implementing of ground breaking technologies which allows pixels to be only 78 micrometers wide. As a result, the new iPhone has 326 pixels per inch, four times more then any other previous model.
The new screen looks crisp and sharp even during high level zoom in. Apple has also used something called IPS (in-plane switching) for the screen. This, as well as the excellent contrast (four times better then previous models 800:1 ) makes it viewable from impossible angles.
In order to protect the screen, the people at Apple have made is exterior layer from special glass which is also used in the aviation industry. This not only makes it more scratch resistant and durable but also more oil resistant thus making it less prone to fingerprint marks.
I really believe that Apple has set a new benchmark with their “Retina” display that a lot of other manufacturers will try to reach. It really is revolutionary and is by far the best feature of the new iPhone. I mean yes, the “Face Time” is also pretty cool and the body is sleeker and better looking then in previous models but there is no way any of these features will manage to overshadow the screen.
